Educational Outreach Program

Professionals: Continuing Education

Teen Workshop The Children’s Hearing Institute is an accredited provider for continuing education by the American Speech and Hearing Assocation (ASHA), the American Academy of Audiology (AAA), and the AG BELL Academy for Listening and Spoken Language Specialists (LSLS).

The Institute’s professional CE courses provide a comprehensive portfolio of educational workshops and conferences for physicians, audiologists, speech language pathologists, teachers of the deaf, social workers and administrators who serve deaf and hard of hearing children. CHI encourages excellence in the delivery of services to its constituents and believes that these educational activities provide wide reaching benefits to children with hearing loss and their families.

CHI’s reputation of course offerings cover a variety of topics that enables us to attract nationally recognized leaders in the field of audiology, speech language pathology, and deaf education. We estimate that our educational outreach program will impact the lives of thousands of children through these conferences.

Parent/Family Education

The Children’s Hearing Institute sponsors a series of free workshops throughout the year to bring together children and their parents to socialize, discuss relevant topics in professionally led groups, and share common questions and concerns. Studies have shown that parents of a child with hearing loss can be most effective when they have a clear understanding of their child’s disability, the challenges faced, and the resources that are available to them. Through their meetings, children form bonds of friendship and camaraderie, which lessen feelings of isolation and provide much needed support. Parents are given access to the information they need to be effective partners with professionals in the treatment of their child. They are also able to network with other parents as more experienced adults give guidance to parents of newly diagnosed children. * These workshops are also offered in Spanish.

Teen/Elementary Music Workshops

One of our most successful group meetings is our Free Elementary & Teen music workshops that are held every Spring and Fall in Long Island. At these workshops kids are encouraged to discover the different sounds instruments can make and to understand variations in rhythm. Age appropriate, popular music that kids enjoy is used to enhance their listening skills to distinguish these patterns. When addressing the Elementary population, music is used to develop listening skills by playing games and demonstrating activities that will ultimately help them improve their social skills at an early age. The goal is to create comfort and trust so children feel confident enough to gain knowledge of their favorite types of music.
