Why our Need is Critical

The Children's Hearing Institute is a leader in raising awareness about the issue of hearing loss. Our philanthropic partners - individuals, foundations and corporations - work with us to support critical research to eradicate deafness.

According to The World Council on Hearing Health, Deafness is America's leading birth defect. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, The National Institutes of Health, says at least one million children are deaf or have a communication disorder. Despite the fact that one out of 10 people are affected to some degree - including infants, children and an escalating number of baby boomers and seniors - hearing studies attract less than 1% of the dollars spent on medical research. Studies indicate the earlier children receive cochlear implants, the more likely they are to avoid serious developmental delays. Early intervention provides children who are deaf or have hearing loss the opportunity to achieve their potential as self-confident, fully actualized individuals.
